Best Domain Names for Professional Services (Without the Waffle)
We’ve been doing this since 2000, and we’ve seen every domain mistake in the book. If you’re an accountant, lawyer, consultant, or any other professional service provider, your domain name matters more than you think. Here’s what actually works, no marketing fluff, just straight talk.
There’s been a flood of new domain names created in the last five years, so make the most of them.
Why Should You Even Care About Domain Names for Professional Services?
Here’s the thing: when someone Googles “accountant near me” at 11 pm because they’ve just realised their tax return is due tomorrow, they’re not looking for clever branding. They want to know immediately that you’re legit and that you do what they need.
That’s where your domain comes in. londonaccounts.accountants tells them everything in two seconds. londonbusinessservices247.com tells them nothing except that you probably bought that domain in 2003.
I’m not saying .com is dead—it’s not. But if you’re competing with 50 other accountants in London (and you are), standing out matters.
The Domain Extensions That Actually Work for Professional Services
.accountants
Who needs this: Accountants. Obviously.
This is the most specific domain you can get. When a business owner sees yourname.accountants, there’s zero confusion. You’re not a bookshop. You’re not a consultant who “also does some accounting.” You’re an accountant.
Yes, it’s one of the pricier extensions. But if you’re charging £150/hour for your services, the extra £70/year over a .com is literally 28 minutes of your time. And it positions you as a specialist, not a generalist.
Real example: Instead of smithbusinessservices.com, go with smith.accountants or smithlondon.accountants
.lawyer and .attorney
Who needs this: Solicitors, barristers, anyone in legal services
Legal work is all about trust. Someone hiring a lawyer is usually stressed, confused, or both. Seeing .lawyer in your domain immediately says “yes, this is an actual legal professional, not some bloke with a WordPress site.”
Fun fact: The .lawyer domain is more common in the UK, while .attorney is the US version. Both work fine here, but .lawyer is more British. Your call.
Real example: familylaw.lawyer beats familylawservicesuk.co.uk every time
.consulting
Who needs this: Anyone who calls themselves a consultant
Consultants are everywhere these days. Business consultants, IT consultants, HR consultants, consultants who consult other consultants (probably). The .consulting extension cuts through the noise.
It’s also reasonably priced compared to some of the other professional extensions, which is nice when you’re just starting out and every £50 matters.
Real example: businessgrowth.consulting is memorable. jonesbusinessconsultingservicesltd.com is not.
.legal
Who needs this: Legal services that aren’t traditional law firms
If you do legal work but you’re not technically a solicitor—maybe you’re a legal consultant, compliance advisor, or you run a legal tech company—this extension is perfect. It says “legal stuff” without claiming you’re a lawyer.
Real example: contractreview.legal or compliance.legal
.tax
Who needs this: Tax specialists
If you only do tax work, this is brilliant. It’s ultra-specific. When someone needs a tax advisor and they see yourname.tax, they don’t have to scroll through your website wondering if you also do payroll, bookkeeping, or financial planning. You do tax. Done.
Real example: smallbusiness.tax or selfemployed.tax
.financial
Who needs this: Financial advisors, wealth managers, financial planners
This is broader than .accountants but still professional. Good for advisory services where you’re not doing the actual accounting, just telling people what to do with their money.
Real example: retirement.financial or wealthplanning.financial
.engineer
Who needs this: Engineers of all flavors
Engineering is a protected title in the UK—you need actual qualifications. This extension reinforces that. Whether you’re civil, structural, mechanical, or electrical, .engineer says “I’m qualified and I know what I’m doing.”
Real example: structural.engineer or civilworks.engineer
What About .com, .co.uk and .uk?
Right, let’s address the elephant in the room. Everyone thinks they need a .com. And look, .com isn’t bad. It’s familiar. It’s what people type automatically.
But here’s the problem: all the good .com domains are taken. You end up with something like smithaccountingserviceslondonuk.com because smithaccounting.com was registered in 1997 by someone in the US who’s never used it.
Meanwhile, smith.accountants is sitting there available, shorter, and actually tells people what you do.
Our advice: Register both if you can afford it. Use the professional extension (.accountants, .lawyer, etc.) as your main domain, and redirect the .co.uk to it. That way you catch people who type .co.uk out of habit, but your branding is on the better domain.
And yes, all UK domain names are only £6 /year with us. That’s 40% cheaper than others. You’re welcome.
Budget-Friendly Alternatives (If Money’s Tight)
Not everyone wants to drop £85 on a domain. We get it. Here are some cheaper options that still look professional:
.business – Generic but respectable. Works for any service business.
.services – Broad but clear. Good if you do multiple things.
.expert – Positions you as an authority without being industry-specific.
.associates – Traditional professional firm naming. Sounds established.
.management – Good for management consultants on a budget.
While these are not the specific domain names for professional services as mentioned above, they’re still good options.
Mistakes We See All The Time (Please Don’t Do These)
Mistake 1: Making it stupidly long
We’ve seen something similar to smith-and-jones-accounting-services-london-uk.com. By the time you’ve told someone that over the phone, they’ve hung up and hired someone else.
Keep it short. If you can’t say it in one breath, it’s too long.
Mistake 2: Using hyphens
Hyphens are the domain equivalent of Comic Sans. They scream, “All the good domains were taken, so I had to improvise.”
Avoid them unless you absolutely have no other choice. And even then, reconsider.
Mistake 3: Forgetting about the phone test
Can you tell someone your domain over the phone without spelling it out? If not, it’s wrong.
“It’s Smith dot accountants” – easy.
“It’s s-m-y-t-h-e hyphen and hyphen associates dot co dot uk” – nightmare.
Mistake 4: Not protecting your name or brand
If you register yourname.consulting, also grab yourname.co.uk and yourname.com if they’re available. Otherwise, someone else will, and they’ll either squat on it or use it to confuse your clients.
It’s £20-30 extra per year. Think of it as brand insurance.
Mistake 5: Ignoring local SEO
Many of our clients are in London. If you’re London-based too, put it in your domain. londonlegal.lawyer will rank better for “lawyer London” than smithlegal.lawyer will.
Google loves local relevance. Use it.
How to Actually Choose Your Domain (5-Minute Exercise)
- Write down what you actually do in one word. Accountant? Lawyer? Consultant?
- Write down your name or your firm’s name. Please keep it simple.
- Combine them. yourname.accountants or firmname.consulting
- Check if it’s available. If not, add your location. yournamelondon.accountants
- Say it out loud. Does it sound ridiculous? If yes, start again. If not, register it before someone else does.
Real Examples from London Businesses
We can’t share actual client domains (privacy and all that), but here’s what works:
Instead of: jmaccountingserviceslondon.com
Try: jmaccounts.accountants or jmlondon.tax
Instead of: smithandjonesolicitorsandbarristers.co.uk
Try: smithjones.lawyer or employmentlaw.legal
Instead of: londonbusinessconsultingservicesltd.com
Try: londonbusiness.consulting or growthstrategy.consulting
See the pattern? Shorter, clearer, more specific.
Why Register With Us Instead of GoDaddy or Ionos?
We’re biased, obviously. But here’s the actual difference:
Price: We’re on average, 40% cheaper on UK domains. A .co.uk costs £6 here vs £11.99 at GoDaddy. Over 10 years, that’s £40 saved. Per domain.
Support: When you email us, securely, you get someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Not a script-reading person in a call centre who’s handling 47 tickets simultaneously.
We don’t hire customer service experts! We service Customers with Experts!
No upselling: We won’t try to sell you website builders, SSL certificates you don’t need, or “premium DNS” (whatever that is). You want a domain? Here’s a domain. Done.
Free IT department: Every client gets access to our support for technical questions. Need help setting up email? We’ll do it. DNS confusing you? We’ll sort it. It’s included with all annual web hosting.
London servers: Our hosting is 100% UK-based, which is better for SEO and faster for your visitors. Plus, it’s green energy powered, if that matters to you.
No IP Theft: Have you ever checked a domain names availability only to find a few hours later somebody else has registered it? Then its for sale for thousands of dollars? Thats no accident! Many registrars will register the names you want in order to sell them back to you for extortionate amounts of money. It’s incredibly frustrating and can waste hours and days of your time. Use our secure, IP Theft Free domain search
What Happens After You Register?
Registering a domain takes about 2 minutes. Then what?
Day 1: Set up a professional email. you@yourfirm.accountants looks infinitely better than yourfirm123@gmail.com
Week 1: Point your domain to your website. If you don’t have a website yet, we can build one for you. Or simply create a landing page with your contact details.
Week 2: Update everything. Business cards, email signatures, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile. Replace your old domain everywhere it appears.
Week 3: Set up redirects from your old domain (if you had one) to your new one. We can help with this.
That’s it. You’re done.
Questions We Get Asked Constantly
“Can I change my domain later if I don’t like it?”
Yes, but it’s super annoying. You’ll need to update all your marketing materials, notify all your clients, and you will lose some Google rankings. Better to get it right the first time.
“Do I really need multiple extensions?”
At minimum, get your professional extension plus .CO.UK, .UK and .COM. That’s usually enough. If your business name is really common, grab .com too. Otherwise don’t worry about it.
“Will this help my Google rankings?”
Indirectly, yes. Google doesn’t specifically favor .accountants over .com, but a relevant domain gets more clicks, and clicks affect rankings. Plus industry-specific domains often rank better for niche searches.
“What if someone already owns my ideal domain?”
Try variations. Add your location, use your full name, or try a different extension. There’s always a solution, even if it’s not your first choice.
“How long does this take?”
Most domains are active within minutes. UK domains are instant. Some international ones take up to 24 hours, but that’s rare.
