Website Scripting Languages
Website scripting languages (Website Code) are server-side scripting languages that manipulate data, usually in a database, on the server.
Such scripting languages emerged mainly due to the development of the Internet as a communication tool. Languages such as JavaScript, ASP, JSP, PHP, Perl, Tcl, and Python are examples of scripting languages.
These two main website languages are Microsoft’s website language of “Active Server Pages” (.asp) and the free Linux equivalent called “Hypertext Preprocessor” (.php)
Hypertext Preprocessor, or PHP as it’s known, is far more commonplace and widely used by database-driven and static websites.
It’s also the language that WordPress runs on and many other widely used website applications. We use PHP here on our website at WESH UK.
The PHP language also runs alongside a database language such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or MariaDB. These are all database storage engines, much like Microsoft’s MSSQL.
Active Server Pages, commonly referred to as ASP, is Microsoft’s solution to server-side scripting.
With simple HTML-only pages, the website user requests a web page from a server. The server just sends the page or file to the visitor, and the page is shown in the client’s browser.
What type of web hosting do you need?
2 main choices here. Microsoft’s licensed Active Server Pages or the free “PHP“. However, if you’re unsure of what you need, then opt for option 2, PHP Web Hosting.
- Microsoft’s language of “Active Server Pages” (.asp)
- The free Linux equivalent called “Hypertext Preprocessor” (.php)
- No website scripting languages required, then pick option 2 for better value.
