Green Web Hosting, or climate-friendly hosting, is web hosting that has minimal to no environmental impact. Day-to-day operations do not consume any fossil fuels. We’re a green web hosting company and have been for well over a decade, long before it was a thing. It was a bit of a joke when greenwashing started and the corporate web hosting companies started pretending to be green. Stuff like “Change nothing, buy carbon credits and plant tree’s! Rediculous!
Look, we’ll be straight with you. Most hosting companies bang on about being “green” but they’re just buying carbon credits or planting a few trees to offset their dirty energy. That’s not what we do.
Our servers live at Pulsant’s Reading South data centre, and here’s the thing – they use 100% renewable electricity. Not 50%, not “we’re working towards it,” but actually 100%. It comes from UK wind farms and hydroelectric plants. Proper green stuff.
Pulsant has been doing this properly for years. They’ve got a whole department dedicated to sustainability (fancy title: Head of Environment and Sustainability).
They publish annual reports showing exactly where their power comes from.
The best bit? Your website performs exactly the same as it would on dirty energy. Same speed, same reliability, same everything. Except now you’re not contributing to the climate mess.
Bottom line:
Your website is as environmentally friendly as it gets, without you having to think about it.
Right, so it’s not just our servers that are green. Our whole office runs on renewable energy too. We get our electricity from Octopus Energy, and before you roll your eyes thinking “here we go, another company claiming to be green,” let me tell you why these lot are different.
Octopus Energy don’t just buy some carbon credits and call it a day. They actually own power purchase agreements with 102 renewable energy plants. That’s 138 solar farms, 16 onshore wind farms, 3 offshore ones, and 3 battery storage projects. They’re putting £2 billion into clean energy by 2030. Even Martin Lewis rates them, and he doesn’t mess about.
Here’s the thing though, when we’re answering your support tickets at 11pm (yes, we’re here every night late), or when we’re processing your domain renewal, or even when we’re making the third cup of tea of the evening, it’s all powered by wind and solar.
The 400,000+ customers giving them 5-star reviews aren’t wrong either. Their Trustscore hasn’t dropped below “Excellent” in 5 years. That’s proper commitment, not just marketing waffle.
So what’s this mean for you? Simple. From the moment you email us to the day-to-day running of your website, the whole chain is clean. No fossil fuels powering your hosting company’s office. No guilt about your website’s carbon footprint.
When you choose to host your online presence with us, you’re supporting a business that actually gives a toss about doing things right – right down to how we power the office coffee machine.
So many hosting companies claim to be green when they’re not. It’s like when someone says they’re on a diet but you catch them eating cake. Here’s the tricks they pull. It’s almost as bad as the labelling on Diet Coke, which claims to be a healthy product, when it’s not even close to healthy.
These crooks have pictures of trees everywhere. “We plant trees!” they say. They sign up for schemes that pay people in other countries to plant trees, and you sign up. The BBC has repeatedly proved these to be complete disasters or scams. There were never any trees, or the ones that were planted all died, because they were planted in places where nothing grows. The money was wasted, and the pollution continues.
But their computers still use dirty electricity. It’s like flytipping, but claiming to be clean because your neighbour gets rid of their rubbish correctly.
They keep polluting, but then give money to someone else to clean it up. That’s like me throwing rubbish on the floor, then paying the cleaner extra. Still making a mess, aren’t I? Investing in cleanup schemes that only clean up the symptoms and effects of their polluting, but do nothing to tackle the cause of it.
Look at organisations like The Ocean Cleanup’s Partners, which have secured significant corporate sponsorships from heavily polluting industries. It’s shameful.
We’re huge fans of the work The Ocean Cleanup is doing, but sadly, nobody is tackling the causes of it all. It’s only treating the symtoms!
“We try to use green energy when we can.” What’s that supposed to mean? Either you do or you don’t. When people say “try” or “when we can,” they usually mean “we can’t be bothered.”
Some buy a piece of paper (Carbon Credits) that claims to offset their pollution. Buying carbon credits is a total bullshit scheme where you pay money to pollute more, when in fact all you’re doing is buying other people’s right to pollute. So the problem is just shifted elsewhere as a fake solution. But they don’t use anything green. It’s like buying a swimming certificate without learning to swim.
Just ask them – where do you get your electricity from? If they can’t tell you or start waffling, they’re probably fibbing. We’ll let you know straight – our servers use SSE Green Energy at Pulsant, and our offices all use Octopus Energy, all sourced from green sources. Simple.
We also bulk-buy all of our office supplies in environmentally friendly packaging. Reducing packaging waste and courier visits.
The Point:
If they won’t give you a straight answer about being green, they probably aren’t. The real green companies love talking about it because they’re proud of what they do. For us, it’s just the norm.
Common sense, great communication and a “Get it done” attitude where you never have to deal with off-shore call centres for the win!
Have you ever wanted to ask a company for something custom but know they will say “Sorry, company policy”? Then we’re the provider for you.
